Council Approves FCM Conference Attendance
This week Whitecourt Town Council voted 3-2 in favour of sending councillors to Ottawa for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) conference from June 1st to the 4th.
The cost per attendee would be around $4900. On Monday night, it was discussed that up to 3 councillors could be approved to attend, for a total of almost $15000.
This year Whitecourt Mayor Maryann Chichak says some of the topics covered at the conference are items town councillors have been discussing for Whitecourt.
The cost for attendance has been cheaper in the past, like when the conference was held closer to home in Edmonton.
Travel expenses make up the bulk of the overall figure, but it’s an expense that some members of council believe to be money well spent.
Last year Mayor Chichak and Town Administration staff spoke with parliamentary players who were then able to assist the Town in securing permits from the Federal Department of Oceans and Fisheries for the Athabasca River Erosion project. Had the approval not been met in time, the Town may have lost out on the grant funding for the project.
Councillors Bill McAree and Derek Schlosser were absent from the council meeting.
The two hold out votes came from Councillor Darlene Chartrand and Councillor Eris Moncur.
